Leaving the military was just the start of Heather’s next career chapter. Now Co Lead of ForcesNet - the Company’s Employee Connection group supporting our armed forces and public service communities - she’s found purpose in bringing people together, supporting others through their career transition, and helping veterans thrive - all while growing her own career.

In my final year of service, I focused on finding roles that aligned with my experience. A friend suggested I explore opportunities at BAE Systems, so despite not meeting all the job criteria I applied anyway.

I was really encouraged to be offered an interview and then considered for a different role that better suited my background. It showed me that my experience was recognised and valued, which made a huge difference when transitioning into a civilian career.

Giving back through community

I joined BAE Systems before ForcesNet was established, but what stood out straight away was the strong support network from other veterans. Those early relationships helped me settle in quickly and feel like I belonged.

I’m now one of the co‑leads of ForcesNet, which is something I’m really proud of. When the opportunity came up, I wanted to give back and support others going through the same transition. Alongside this, I’m also involved in other employee communities and act as a Mental Health First Aider.

One of the highlights has been working with our global community. This year, we had the honour of laying a wreath on Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day in London on behalf of our Australian colleagues - a powerful moment that reinforced our shared purpose across networks.

The support I received from fellow veterans made all the difference - now I’m proud to give that same support to others transitioning from the forces.

Bringing military skills into civilian roles

My military background continues to shape how I work today. While defence knowledge is important, it’s the transferable skills that really stand out: leadership, decision making under pressure, adaptability and stakeholder management.

These are things we often take for granted in the military, but they add real value in a civilian workplace.

Support as a working parent

Balancing work and family life is incredibly important to me, and BAE Systems has been very supportive. The maternity leave provision is excellent, and the attitude towards flexible working has made a real difference.

I’ve recently moved to a term‑time contract, which allows me to purchase additional leave to cover school holidays. It’s been a complete game changer for our family and has allowed me to balance my career and home life in a way that works.

Advice for others leaving the military

Leaving the military can feel daunting - it’s more than a job, it’s a way of life. But I’d encourage anyone making that transition not to undersell themselves.

You have a unique and valuable skillset. The challenge is often translating that into language that resonates outside the military, but there’s plenty of support available to help with that.

My advice would be to look for organisations where support networks exist, like ForcesNet, and don’t be afraid to reach out. You’ll quickly find that you’re not alone.
