Tom's journey highlights the opportunities to build skills, progress your career and make a real impact. From school-leaver to highly-skilled, fully qualified machinist, the precision components he makes helps keep some of the world's most technically advanced fast jets flying.

I was first drawn to BAE Systems because of the role it played in my local community. Growing up, it was always recognised as a place where people could build a future in engineering. My work experience here gave me my first real insight into the scale and importance of the work, and it sparked a curiosity that quickly grew into a genuine interest. At that point, engineering was still new to me, but seeing the expertise within the teams and the complexity of the projects made me want to be part of it.

I joined the BAE Systems Higher Apprenticeship programme straight from school in 2018. Early on, I had the chance to explore different areas through trade tests, which helped me understand what engineering could offer. I found myself naturally drawn to machining. I enjoyed the precision, the technical challenge and the hands on problem solving. The first year gave me a strong foundation across CAD, fitting and machining, helping me build confidence before specialising.

As I moved through placements, I worked across different machine shops and alongside a wide range of experienced people. Each environment helped me grow in different ways and understand how my role fits into the bigger picture. I’ve always felt supported to learn, ask questions and keep improving, which has been a big part of my development.

Being supported to learn and grow from the very beginning has helped me build confidence in my skills and feel proud of the part I play every day.

Machinist, UK

After completing my apprenticeship, I became a qualified machinist and decided to continue developing my knowledge. I completed my HNC in Manufacturing Engineering and I’m now working towards a BEng (Hons) alongside my role. Balancing work and study has been challenging at times, but it’s helped me grow in confidence and deepen my understanding of what I do.

One of my proudest moments was being nominated for, and winning, the Craft Mechanical Apprentice of the Year award. Being put forward by my skills coach meant a lot, as it showed that the effort I’d put into developing had been recognised.

Working on site keeps things interesting. With different projects and contracts coming through, no two days feel the same. Some days are straightforward, others require more problem solving, but I enjoy that variety. The team around me makes a big difference too, it’s a supportive environment where people share knowledge and work through challenges together. Turning a solid block of metal into a detailed aircraft component is something I still find really satisfying, especially when I see those components in action.

Being part of a wider, global organisation has also broadened my perspective. I’m connected to teams, ideas and ways of working from across the business, which helps me keep learning and improving. Contributing to something on that scale gives my role a real sense of purpose.

Being supported, challenged and encouraged to keep learning is what makes this journey so rewarding.
