Throughout my engineering degree, BAE Systems was a name that came up time and time again. Coming from a family of engineers, I knew about the company’s rich history, but something that really stood out for me was the advocacy and celebration of early career engineers and championing that progression all the way through a career.
There was a sense of challenge and ambition around the work. I wanted to be a part of an organisation that was delivering meaningful programmes and supporting those who protect us. Being able to contribute to that mission gives me a huge sense of purpose.
From university to graduate engineer
My journey started as a summer intern, before returning for a year-long industrial placement. Those experiences gave me exposure to different engineering disciplines, helped me build confidence and introduced me to systems engineering for the first time.
What stood out was the support from the people around me. Everyone was willing to answer questions, share their experiences and encourage me to explore different career paths. By the end of my placements, I knew there was still so much more to learn.
Today, as part of the graduate programme, I’m continuing to develop both technically and professionally through structured learning, network opportunities and personal effectiveness courses designed to prepare us for the future.
The professional development opportunities, mentorship from experienced colleagues and support from the wider early careers community have given me confidence in what I can achieve and excitement for where my career could go next.

Engineering that makes a difference
One of the highlights of my career so far has been working on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) alongside partners in the UK, Japan and Italy.
Being involved in understanding operational needs and future capabilities allowed me to contribute to a programme that will have a lasting impact. It also introduced me to model based systems engineering and challenged me to think differently about solving complex problems.
To be involved in a programme of this scale so early in my career has been incredibly rewarding and has shown me what is possible when you’re given the opportunity to learn and grow.
I'm also part of the Systems Engineering Working Group, which not only brings together systems engineers across the UK, but also those who are interested in the discipline and want to collaborate in their areas of expertise.
Learning from a global community
One of the things I value most about BAE Systems is the opportunity to collaborate with people from different backgrounds, disciplines and countries.
Working with international colleagues has broadened my perspective and helped me develop as an engineer. The chance to learn from different approaches, cultures and ways of thinking has shaped how I solve problems and strengthened my confidence in contributing my own ideas.
It’s one of the reasons I returned after my placements. The breadth of knowledge across the business means there is always something new to learn and someone willing to share their experience.
A place to grow and belong
The inclusive culture at BAE Systems has always made me feel supported and encouraged to be myself at work. As a woman in engineering, I’m grateful that I’ve never felt my gender has been a barrier. Instead, I’ve been encouraged to challenge perspectives, ask questions and bring my own individuality to the role. This acceptance and the culture here has encouraged me to explore opportunities to do the same for others.
I attended Leeds Pride as an ally on behalf of OutLink, BAE Systems' network for sexual and gender diversity, to better understand the experiences of others and show my support for an inclusive workplace.
