After building a successful career in education, Samantha made the bold decision to retrain and step into the working world of defence. Now a project management apprentice in our radar team at BAE Systems, she’s developing future skills and showing apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers.

Before joining BAE Systems in 2024, I worked as a secondary school teacher and was already aware of the opportunities an apprenticeship could bring. I reached a point where I was ready to build a new career, and project management seemed like a natural fit.

I wanted the opportunity to complete structured learning while gaining real experience and a degree apprenticeship offered exactly that. I already knew of BAE Systems due to where I live, but also because my husband has worked here since he graduated. Seeing the breadth of roles he’d experienced, and the long-term career opportunities available, helped reinforce that this was the right place to take my next step.

Building future skills through real-world learning

In my role as a project management degree apprentice, I’ve been working on a range of products including torpedoes and future radar systems. Being part of these projects has given me first-hand insight into the scale, complexity and importance of the work we do.

I’ve focused on developing the technical foundations of project management - including how to use tools such as MS Project to build schedules, understand resourcing requirements and work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure we achieve our objectives.

Studying alongside my role means I’m applying new knowledge immediately, and I’ve been able to experience project management in motion.

Before starting, my confidence had taken a knock. This apprenticeship has shown me that when you’re supported by your colleagues, you’re able to achieve far more than you might expect.

Global opportunities

After I complete my apprenticeship, I’m keen to explore the possibility of working abroad. I would love to explore moving back to Australia to continue working for BAE Systems on one of the many projects that the company is delivering there.

I’d recommend the apprenticeship because you don’t just learn about the role - you live it. It’s a great way to truly understand BAE Systems as a business, because you’re part of it from the very beginning.
