After leaving the Armed Forces, I initially pursued a career as a freelance consultant, navigating the transition from military to civilian life. The move from military to civilian life wasn’t always easy, and I quickly realised how important it is to keep options open and explore different roles rather than settling for the first opportunity that comes along.
Finding a new path after military service
When I first joined BAE Systems, I worked as a business analyst and change management practitioner in Digital Intelligence. I thrived for four years, but I felt drawn to a completely different path within the organisation. My lived experiences showed me I could make a meaningful impact in the Inclusion Centre of Excellence, so I took the leap into the role I now hold. As a Partnerships, Awards and Comms Manager, I focus on driving operational excellence globally, confronting the status quo, and managing benchmarking, Inclusion communications and the lifecycle of inclusion-related award systems sponsored by the company each year.
Thriving at BAE Systems requires openness and a willingness to explore new paths. The company has supported me every step of the way, helping me pursue work that excites me and make a real difference. I’m particularly committed to driving innovative strategies to reverse the trend of diminishing interest in STEM careers, expanding and diversifying our talent pipeline to attract, retain, and elevate underrepresented professionals in technology and science.
One of my proudest achievements has been founding ForcesNet and shaping it into the thriving community it is today. I’m incredibly proud of the impact it has had on our veterans and their families - creating a space where veterans, reservists, cadet force adult volunteers, and supporters can connect without judgement and regain a sense of camaraderie reminiscent of military service.
Now with over 1,400 members and under new management, ForcesNet is poised to grow even further and support a wider community. My advice to others looking to progress is to be proactive about growth. Step forward, communicate your interests, and be ready to take calculated risks. With the right mindset and support, you can pioneer new responsibilities, develop your skills, and thrive in ways you never imagined.
